Few students who enrolled with Iain Armstrong at Melbourne's National Gallery School in the mid 1940's had any though of a full time career as an artist. A decade of the depression followed by the war years had left them with different ideas - artists were people with private means or other occupations. This was something Armstrong could not accept, art for him was too important not to demand his full attention. His persistence in this for over more than fifty years testifies to both his commitment and to his determination.
